Summer Camps for Middle and High School Students

The MRSEC partners with the Action Potential Science Experience program in producing and presenting our summer camps.

Where Science and a Wizard's World Collide
The collision of scientific principles and the magical universe of J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter was the topic of a new Physics camp developed by the MRSEC. Faculty, researchers, graduate students and undergraduates took action to teach hands-on, science-based laboratories and activities. Through this program we strived to interest, challenge and excite 5th-8th grade students in the area of physics, thereby raising the potential of young men and women in our surrounding Pennsylvania communities. Participants had the opportunity to learn that many of the magical things about the Muggle world can be explained and understood using science. Navigational skills were developed to escape from the Forbidden Forest. Motion and force concepts were explored by riding the Hogwartz Express, launching rockets and observing levitation using modern materials and much, much more!

Another Wizard's World: Potions
Using the magical world of J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter as a background theme, 5th-8th grade participants spend a week brewing up a magical adventure. A new faculty of wizards and the Prefects of our prestigious Chemistry Houses await the participants arrival. They will create slimy potions, gooey potions, fizzing and fuming potions, sweet-smelling potions, sweet-tasting potions, and Penn State polyjuice potions.
