The Adventure of the Apprentice's Stone
Greenberg, Mallouk, Bortiatynski, and Sykes Education and Outreach
The Penn State Center for Nanoscale Science and The Action Potential Science
Experience have collaborated to develop an innovative materials and nanoscience
summer camp program titled "The Adventure of the Apprentice's Stone." The week long
journey transports 4th-8th grade students into the magical world of the Penn State School
of Potions. During their week long apprenticeship young wizards learn that science is all
around them through a series hands on explorations into the nanoworld. Each day's
activities help students to unlock a secret message. The week's messages combine to
reveal the knowledge contained in the Apprentice's Stone. The innovative curriculum
was designed to connect art, history, and science. Activity topics include ferrofluids,
nitinol, zeolites, and lithography. The program ran during summer 2004 attracting more
than 150 campers from around the United States and in 2005 will run on the Penn State
campus and off campus locations in New York State.
