The outreach and knowledge transfer of the Center with industry is driven primarily through research collaborations between its members with scientists and engineers in corporate research laboratories. Many members of the Penn State MRSEC have such collaborations. Companies with active collaborations with faculty members of the center include Philips, Zyvex, Sigma-Aldrich, Dow Chemical, Sematech, SRC, Veeco, GeoCenters, Optimetrics, Platypus, IBM, GE, Saronix, Schott Glass, Chem Image Corp., Illuminex, Nanoscience, Inc., Carbolex, 3M, DuPont, Lockheed Martin, PPG, Nomadics, and Sentech Biomed. Through the MRSEC industrial affiliates program, students are jointly supported by industrial and Center funds on projects of mutual interest. University-industry intellectual property agreements are executed in advance of these jointly funded projects. Industrial scientists who participate in the program are invited to join the Center's external advisory board. For more details on the program, please contact the
Center director.
A number of our faculty have organized industrial workshops and have presented tutorials and invited talks at meetings and conferences with very significant industrial participations. The center is also the host for a number of visiting scientists from industry and government laboratories. Members of the Center have been key participants in Materials Day, an annual event co-sponsored by MRI and Penn State's Industrial Research Office which brings scientists from over 80 companies to Penn State. Center faculty are also important participants in CrossOver, a one-day symposium modeled after Materials Day with a focus on science and industrial collaboration at the interface between nanomaterials and life sciences.
