During the summer students must be enrolled in a program leading to a bachelor's degree. The only exception is for students transferring from one university or college to another. High school graduates who have not yet entered a bachelor's program, and seniors graduating before the summer are not eligible. Most students in the program will probably be college juniors, however applications are welcomed from sophomores and in exceptional cases those completing their freshman year.
Students majoring in Materials Science and related fields are encouraged to apply. Students majoring in physics, chemistry, mathematics, and related science fields who are interested in pursuing graduate studies in materials science areas, are also welcome to apply.
The REU program is open to students nationwide. It is highly encouraged for students from colleges other than Penn State to apply. Students currently attending a Penn State branch campus are also welcome to apply. Penn State students at the University Park campus should apply for the John and Elizabeth Holmes Teas Scholarship program
