Next Event: Fall 2016
(Check back here for details this summer!)
The Women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) Mixer is a 2-hour professional networking program which strives to connect women with others from a variety of STEM disciplines at multiple levels along the post-secondary career path. Attendees are graduate students, undergraduates, post-docs, research faculty, and industry representatives. Esteemed faculty are identified and invited to host a table and facilitate a small group discussion. Industry representatives are invited to participate as co-hosts. Men are included and welcome.
Participants are greeted by a featured faculty speaker who briefly introduces the theme and offers insight into the specific topics to be discussed. After this large group introduction, attendees are provided with the first of three 10-15 minute discussion questions. At the conclusion of each discussion, hosts remain seated while participants rotate to their next table. A short large-group presentation follows the last discussion. Finally, instructions are given for the informal networking activity that concludes the program.
Attendees are encouraged to exchange contact information with others. Business cards and tips for successful networking interactions are provided.
The event is sponsored by the Penn State MRSEC, a NSF funded interdisciplinary materials research center (Center for Nanoscale Science), in partnership with Physics & Astronomy for Women (PAW), the Materials Research Institute (MRI), and The Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences.
Discussion questions revolve around the professional skills, knowledge, resources, and experiences needed for employment and ultimate success in STEM careers. Although this is a professional networking event, dress is casual to encourage students and faculty to simply come as they are at the end of a typical day. Space is limited and pre-registration is required so that attendance is known for planning purposes. A waiting list will be created.
The event is free to all participants.
Beverages and food are provided.
